Albuterol? Does the medicine Albuterol, used for treatment of asthma, contain steroids?

lilangel replied: "No, I take aulbuterol it does not contain steriods. It is not a steriod drug. Maybe other inhalers like atrovent have steriods but I am almost positive that aulbuterol does not."

Sophie replied: "nope. and thank God it doesn't."

What's the difference between albuterol and albuterol sulfate? I always used to get albuterol but my last pre ion filled was albuterol sulfate. Is this the new form of albuterol?

GAgirl replied: "Albuterol is going to be changed, or atleast the way it is delivered. You may have gotten the new one. The old one uses an aerosol to deliver the meds, but the new one does not. That is supposed to be the only change."

bmac replied: "No. It's always been albuterol sulfate. Most doctors will just write "albuterol" on the pre ion because pharmacists know that is albuterol sulfate."

What symptoms may cause a doctor to prescribe Albuterol over other asthma medications? For what particular asthma symptoms does Albuterol (Salbutamol) cater to? Why may a doctor determine that his or her patient needs to take albuterol instead of other potential asthma medications?

eliza replied: "Albuterol is a rescue inhaler. Everyone who has asthma, to any degree, should have a rescue inhaler to use in case of an acute asthma attack. If a patient has symptoms more often than once a month during the day or once a week at night, s/he should also have a long-term preventative asthma treatment. Albuterol can also be administered in a nebulizer machine, which people who have severe asthma usually have in their homes."

Nichole R replied: "Simply. Albuterol is the cheapest selective B2 quick acting med out there. Like the previous poster mentioned, it is a rescue inhaler and it has been around forever so it's dirt cheap."

catiators replied: "Albuterol is a rescue medication. If the patient has only occasional symptoms, and doesn't have significant attacks, this medication would likely be all that was prescribed. Other medications, longer acting bronchodilators, and particularly anti-inflammatory medications, would be necessary if asthma is more persistent or becomes chronic. Asthma generally worsens with age, and will require more and more medication to control."

Frustrated RT replied: "Fast acting B2 agonists like albuterol "cater" to the bronchial smooth muscle constriction that is occuring arround your lower airways. the albuterol relaxes the smooth muscle allowing the bronchioles to widen and more air to pass. There is airway inflammation occuring as well that is usually taken care of with steroids. If you use your inhaler more than twice a week your asthma may not be controlled and you may need to be taking controller meds as well. Like Nichole mentioned Albuterol is the cheapest and most widely used beta agonist rescue inhaler. there is another that is used but it hasn't been proven to work any better or faster and its about 6 times as expensive."

How many drops of concentrated Albuterol solution to Saline solution should I use? I finally found some saline I can use with my albuterol medicine. Now all I need to know is the proper mixture ratio. Can you help?

firechick1721 replied: "if you are using a nebulizer and you are an adult, the proper mixture is: 2.5 mg of albuterol to 3 ml of normal saline... make sure there is a fine mist before starting inhaling...."

Kitty replied: "for the albuterol it should have come with a dropper. if you don't have a dropper with it then you want about 1/2cc if your using a syringe. And as for the saline you want between 2 and 3cc. its a matter of if 2cc of saline and the albuterol irritates your lungs to a point of a sore throat from coughing then try using 3cc to dilute the albuterol. I have Cystic fibrosis and thats what my doctors have always told me."

Vik V replied: "Inhalation Aerosol If you are being treated for a sudden or severe bronchial spasm or the prevention of asthma symptoms, the usual dosage of albuterol inhalation aerosol is 2 inhalations repeated every 4 to 6 hours. More frequent use is not recommended. In some individuals, 1 inhalation every 4 hours may be sufficient. To prevent exercise-induced bronchial spasm, the usual dosage is 2 inhalations, 15 minutes prior to exercise. Tablets The usual starting dose for adults and children 12 years of age and older is 2 or 4 milligrams 3 to 4 times a day. Dosage should not exceed 32 milligrams per day. Syrup The usual starting dose for adults and children over 12 years of age is 1 or 2 teaspoonfuls 3 or 4 times a day. Dosage should not exceed 4 teaspoonfuls 4 times a day. Albuterol sulfate Inhalation Solution The usual dosage for adults and children 12 years of age and older is 2.5 milligrams administered 3 to 4 times daily by nebulization. Do not use more often or in higher doses. To administer 2.5 milligrams, use the entire contents of a unit-dose bottle of the 0.083% solution or dilute 0.5 milliliter of the 0.5 percent solution with 2.5 milliliters of sterile normal saline solution. Albuterol sulfate Repetabs, Volmax Extended-Release Tablets, and VoSpire Extended-Release Tablets The usual recommended dosage for adults and children 12 years of age and older is 8 milligrams every 12 hours. In some people, 4 milligrams every 12 hours may be sufficient. If the desired effect is not achieved with the standard dosage, your doctor may increase doses to a maximum of 32 milligrams per day, divided into two 16-milligram doses spaced 12 hours apart. Those taking standard tablets or syrup can switch to extended-release tablets. One extended-release tablet every 12 hours is equivalent to one 2-milligram standard tablet every 6 hours."

What is the difference between Albuterol and Alupent for quick acting asthma relief? I hove both Albuterol and Alupent in my medicine cabinet. My doctor didn't give me clear directions about which to take. The pharmacist said that both are interchangeable. Is this true? What is the difference?

Matt A replied: "To make it simple, They both do the same thing. The way I understand it is, Alupent was first on the market for asthma relief and had many side effects like racing heart and overall jittery feeling. Then came along albuterol. Albuterol did the same as Alupent on opening the airways and had less side effects. To add to this, now there is Levalbuterol (Xopenex) that has less side effect then albuterol. If I were you, I would use the one that did the best for asthma relief and had the least side effects. Good luck"

Sheila T replied: "Both are considered quick-acting beta agonists. Which one works better for you when you need it? That's the question that will answer which one you should take. And the answer to that question is different for everyone. For example, albuterol works best for me when I need something, but some kinds of albuterol (Proventil HFA, for instance) don't work as well as others do (ProAir HFA, for example). So then, something else to think about is whether it's just the medication or the brand of it. In theory, it doesn't matter what you use, but in practice, it can make all the difference in the world when you're having an exacerbation."

mike.marlow replied: "Matt's right. Albuterol has less cardiac side effects."

What can an overdose of albuterol do to you? I think I may be taking too much albuterol...a lot too much. And it makes me really shaky. I feel like I'm so shaky I almost can't walk and have trouble thinking. I've read that overdoses can cause seizures and such. Is this type of thing what I am experiencing? I'm not so sure on what the dosage should be, but I seem to have breathing troubles a lot. I think half of the problems could be caused by the albuterol. Part of the problem is that my breath seems to come out as if I'm crying or trembling and my heart is racing. I already have singulair and advair. Albuterol is my emergency inhaler, and truthfully, I take it for the buzz. I like the way it makes me feel in my head. Does this make me a druggie? I've actually taken it 35 times in one day before.

Griff replied: "Albuterol increases the efficiency of your lungs. If you are shaky, your lungs may be too efficient. You can over correct your oxygen intake by inhaling too much albuterol."

Elaine T replied: "the normal dose for an albuterol inhaler is: 2 puffs by mouth every 4 to 6 hours. you shouldn't use it more than 6 times a day. if you are, you can o.d. on albuterol, and also, you should be on something else to help control your breathing, because albuterol isn't really supposed to be a maintenance drug, it's more of an emergency drug. ask your doctor about something like Advair or Singulair. those drugs help keep you from having asthma attacks, and you wouldn't need to use your albuterol as much."

Mike10462 replied: "Albuterol affects your heart rate. Overdosing on albuterol could lead to cardiac arrest. The safe dose is 2 puffs no more than four times a day. If you use albuterol and it doesn't help your breathing, see your doctor immediately."

Run4Cover replied: "It's difficult to overdose and the shakes are a common side effect of the albuterol. Try eating before you use it and that should help with the shakes and difficulty thinking."

Gary S replied: "First off are you taking inhalers or do you use a nebulizer machine? If you are on an inhaler then 2 puffs every 6 hours is the usual dose in a severe attack you can take 2 puffs every 4 hours., if no improvement go to nearest ER. If using a nebulizer machine it is one neb every 4 hours but in a severe attack you can take one neb every 15 mins for 1 hour if no improvement you need to be in hospital. Albuterol will make you shaky it is a side effect of the medicine especially if you are having to use the inhaler or nebulizer more often. Once you increase the use of your inhalers, or nebulizers and breathing is not improving you need to go to the nearest ER."

Lisa L replied: "I get shakey from it too. I need it but I hate the way I feel when I use it. It's better to use maintenance drugs like Singulair. You take one tablet at night before you go to bed, and you really don't have breathing difficulties anymore. Only in extreme situations. Albuterol is similar to adrenaline. It's not good to take too much. Not at all. So stop doing it. Go to an allergist. Not a regular doctor, but an allergy doctor, who specializes in asthma. There are tons of things you can do to prevent getting symptoms at all. You can make simply lifestyle changes in your home that will really make a big difference in the quality of your life - AND it will mean less albuterol."

funboy_aric replied: "I would compare your dosage to what is standard by the FDA. A typical dose pre ion for a standard, chronic patient is 2.5mg Albuterol sulfate in 3cc normal saline taken by aerosol four times daily. (albuterol unit dose QID via SVN)."

misashea replied: "Unlike what Run4Cover stated in his answer, YES you can OD on albuterol. Too much does cause irregular heart rhythms, dizziness and possibly seizures. A very few people also have a type of "allergy" to regular albuterol. There is a new form of albuterol called Xopenex that has fewer side effects. But you do need to see an allergist or pulmonary doctor to get this under control, and get the right medications for you."

byron101540 replied: "For overdose, read near the end of this link. ( does even more that whats listed) For other drugs What other drugs will affect albuterol? Before taking albuterol, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines: a beta-blocker such as atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), propranolol (Inderal), acebutolol (Sectral), bisoprolol (Zebeta), carteolol (Cartrol), carvedilol (Coreg), labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate), nadolol (Corgard), or pindolol (Visken); a tricyclic antidepressant such as amitriptyline (Elavil), doxepin (Sinequan), nortriptyline (Pamelor), amoxapine (Asendin), clomipramine (Anafranil), desipramine (Norpramin), imipramine (Tofranil), or protriptyline (Vivactil); a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate); another oral or inhaled bronchodilator; or caffeine, diet pills, or decongestants. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Note the words 2 lines above ~~ another oral or inhaled bronchodilator One friend compalined that his systolic pressure was about 220 A month later he had a stroke Another friend complained about high blood pressure, now has a ruptured aorta They gave me 5 neb treatments of albuterol, my systolic pressure was 195, I was so shakey I couldn't hold the nebulizer"

gizmo's pal replied: "making your heart race is just what too much albuterol will do. it should be used as a rescue(fast acting) inhaler. NOT for long term use . see a dr. may need advent or advair or even spiriva for long term care , good luck"

Why when I have an asthma attack albuterol does not work but coughing deep to where I vibrate my lungs helps? Whenever I have an asthma attack albuterol does not work. The only thing that works is coughing really hard until my lungs vibrate really hard and then my asthma goes away. Why is this? how would flomax work? I am on advair. albuterol. and xolair twice a month.

akitashencp replied: "When you viberate you lungs, it stimulates the bronchi which loosens up the fluids in them causing the swelling to reduce to their normal size. If Albuterol doesnt work then mabey your asthma isnt as sereve as you think and you may not need it. Try Flomax 110mcg x2 qd or even Advair, that prevents asthma from even acouring. If you still have this problem, your are probably not an asthmatic."

Hatty F replied: "I don`t know but you need to see a doctor as you might damage your lungs!"

Mary replied: "You need a pulmonary function test. If a bronchodilator works. Maybe you have copd and not asthma."

Is it dangerous to take ecstasy while on albuterol? Is it dangerous to take ex with albuterol? I also heard dont take ex at all if you have asthma. Anyone know why?

MissBrookes replied: "Yes because its really bad for you. It can effect you respiratory system so you shouldnt take it with asthama... but you shouldnt take it at all. Its a class A drug for a reason, I know two people who had their drinks spiked (they didnt know) at different occassions one was my sister four years ago and one my friend two months ago, both had bad reactions and ended up hospitalised."

Tom replied: "Its just PLAIN STUPID to take EX STACY under ANY Circumstances."

Ines replied: "Yes, extremely so."

alitaceres replied: "I wouldn't combine it with any other medication because it is really hard on the liver and kidneys. Ecstasy has a bad rap these days because all the non-MDMA drugs that manufactuers are filling it with these days to cut costs- speed, coke, crack...trust me, they will use anything. I'm going to tell you right now, if it has any white specks in it, that shit is not ecstasy, no matter what the dealer tells you. Real MDMA tablets are solid colored. They are also not as crumbly as the fake pills are. Ok well, I could warn you all day long but seriously, don't take unnecessary risks, especially with Ecstasy. I have been doing it for years now and honestly I have not gotten any pills that tested positive for MDMA in about three years, so unless you are 100% sure that you are getting the real thing, you are just going to get hyped up on coke/speed/crack whatever and it isn't the same as MDMA."

Sara S replied: "Isn't ecstasy dangerous anyway - whether you take it with something or not. My advise - DON'T take ex."

Fluffy Cheryl replied: "taking any illegal drugs is dangerous"

oc.wellness replied: "mdma and albuterol both increase your heart rate. along with speed, coke, and whatever else may be in the beans. you don't want your heart rate to go too high. I used to take x a lot, so i'm not just saying its' a bad idea "because ecstasy is BADDD!!" but to answer your question, yes it's bad to mix. and I have asthma and never noticed any problems however mine is very mild - i don't even have an inhaler. BUT on another note, i do hate x now and recommend you don't take it. from personal experience and witnessing the same from my friends...it's not worth it. most people end up developing anxiety to some degree before they give it up, and usually to a high degree. i have bad anxiety now, i'm basically neurotic in many ways, and this has also happened to a lot of friends. AND, studies prove that no length of time will reverse that. so...please please please just don't do it. i promise i know from experience it feels sooo amazing but trust me that high is not worth a lifelong low."

neonlights1971 replied: "Well first of all, albuterol is a steriod.. you want to mix that with a steriod?? Think!!! HELLO!"

What will happen to my albuterol refills? I was just wondering, I will have 3 refills of my albuterol left by the time my one year anniversary of my dr. appointment will occur. I don't have an asthma attack every day, usually only if I'm sick already or I have been around a lot of my asthma triggers. Will those albuterol refills just expire, or can I continue to get them refilled until I run out of refills?

duane4ta replied: "I'm thinking that you may need to call the Dr.'s Office OR the Pharmacy where you got the original Rx filled... Also, if you have been 'diagnosed' w/ asthma, you need to know your triggers, & try to avoid them....Your Dr. may also be able to put you on other inhalers, that are'nt opf the 'rescue' variety as is the Albuterol...I am on Advai, daily, & it helps me alot...just saying here...."

Can I boil albuterol and breathe in the fumes? I'm having an asthma/panic attack and I can find my inhaler. I've searched everywhere. I no longer have my machine but I do have a few little tubes of albuterol. I know I'm supposed to breathe in the albuterol fog so could I put the albuterol in a pot and boil it or should I add water to it? What do I do? Please help!

D replied: "Could you quickly put it in a misting spray bottle?"

sammie_miles replied: "I am no chemist----- but it may change the components of the albuterol and make it posionous. You might want to call a 24 hour pharmacy and ask the pharmacist. What about breathing into a paper bag?"

Craig A replied: "Coffee is said to contain epinephrine, which is a chemical that is said to temporarily relieve the symptoms of asthma, but if you are having an asthma attack you need to go to the emergency room at the hospital and get another inhaler, as coffee is certainly not guaranteed to help. It does not matter if you have no money because they will bill you. They can not refuse to treat you. If I were you I would not sleep until I had another inhaler handy, because from what I understand an asthma attack can kill you fairly easily."

michele replied: "You should always have more then one inhaler, and about albuterol,I would suggest putting in a bowl with a little boiling water, then breathe in the steam with a clothe around your head and the bowl. But get medical help A.S.AP."
